RISD: Keeping the Castle

Art meets history meets science, as kids visualize a medieval kingdom and its centerpiece: the castle. Lessons in scale model building start the session as students construct walls, moats and galleries. Students build their own simple machines: catapults for launching projectiles at the walls they've made, followed by the design of cranes and towers needed to rebuild their scale model fortress. Students visualize the kings, queens, knights, farmers and animals found inside and outside the walls and the faires, festivals and tournaments (with jousting matches!) that are the most fun in an imagined castle community.

RISD: Artin' Around

Play and expression come together in this course that introduces children to basic art-making techniques and art vocabulary. Inspired by a theme, students are encouraged to come up with creative solutions that can begin as drawings, become vibrant paintings and then three-dimensional constructions. Lessons in the process are demonstrated and reflected upon as students consider a creative method that is thoughtfully discussed and becomes part of a creative arc that extends beyond the last class, as they continue "Artin' Around."

RISD: Here Come the Robots

Robot: The word conjures up so many amazing images from movies, cartoons, comic books, games and toys. Young artists excite their imaginations with visions of drones, cyborgs and androids as they explore the history and possibilities of robots, as well as their place in science fiction and scientific fact. Students will create movie posters and comic book illustrations, build model robots, and they'll also explore the very real and beneficial side of robotics by building mechanical hands and other machines.

RISD: Tooning Around

Here's the chance for young 'toonists to get funny, silly or scary as they get serious about learning to create their own cartoon characters. Using basic pencil and pen-and-ink drawing techniques, students play with line and learn to experiment with personality on paper. Inspired by the rich tradition of cartooning found in children's books, comic strips and animated cartoons, young artists bring their most whimsical ideas to life. So, when it's time to return to reality, students will have increased their confidence with both words and pictures, and had some rollicking good fun in the process.

RISD: Adventures in Drawing

Artist Keith Haring once said, "Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic." Young artists discover the nature of that magic, as they take command of the marks they make, and are provided with thorough grounding in the basics of drawing and sketching. Assignments utilize a rich array of drawing materials, while expanding on traditional subject matter: still lifes, landscapes and portraits, as students explore the range of observational and abstract mark-making. This course takes them to visit the RISD Nature Lab and RISD Museum as students experience a hands-on adventure in drawing.

Here is a chance for young artists to emulate the art that exists in nature as they define for themselves the nature of art. Students in this course visit RISD's Edna Lawrence Nature Lab and the RISD Museum in search of animals, birds and more. They then use the visual forms and artworks they discover as inspiration for a variety of creative projects. In the process, the course develops art and natural science awareness, builds basic art and design skills, and encourages young artists to explore a variety of media.

RISD: Experiments in Animation

Let's animate! This course exposes students to the many faces of animation which, at its core, is the art of creating the illusion of moving pictures. Whether it's one of the Totoros of Miyazaki, Disney's winter fairies creating poetry on ice, or the wacky instructional animations of Sesame Street, animation is an art form that wears many masks. As you learn the computer-based tools (including Adobe Photoshop) that make the illusion of movement possible, you'll begin to understand visual storytelling and composition for the screen. At the end of the course, you'll leave with animated movie clips that are proof of your first experience with animation.
