The Shrine is officially called "The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America." The Shrine got its fancy name from its founders, who hit upon the idea of using the Middle Eastern theme as the backdrop for their new fraternity in the 1870s, with the idea of fun in mind. The Shrine is a fraternity - a group of men with common interests who basically like to get together and have a good time.
